FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

about us

Who are The Bernedoodettes?

Beso and Bailey are our sister Bernedoodles living their fluffiest lives in New York City. They’re playful, sweet, and full of personality—one’s the life of the party, and the other’s the queen of cuddles.

What is a Bernedoodle?

A Bernedoodle is a hybrid dog created by crossing a Bernese Mountain Dog with a Poodle. Our dogs are specifically Mini Bernedoodles, meaning the mother is a Bernese Mountain Dog and the father is a Miniature Poodle. The goal of the mix is to combine the Bernese’s affectionate temperament with the Poodle’s intelligence and lower-shedding coat.

Are they hypoallergenic?

Not completely — no dog truly is. However, because of the Poodle genetics, many Bernedoodles shed significantly less than pure Bernese Mountain Dogs and tend to be more allergy-friendly for some people.

How big do Mini Bernedoodles get?

This depends on the size of the poodle they are bred with. If breeding with a miniature poodle, typically 25–50 lbs depending on genetics, diet, and generation. Our girls fall within the smaller end of the range because their dads were both Miniature Poodle (~20lbs).

What generation are your dogs?

They are first-generation crosses (F1): Bernese Mountain Dog mother × Miniature Poodle father.

Are they from the same litter?

No, Bailey and her sister are not from the same litter and not from the same breeder.

Are Bernedoodles good with children?

Extremely. The Bernese temperament makes them gentle, patient, and affectionate, which is why they’re often called “velcro dogs.”

Are Bernedoodles easy to train?

Yes, they inherit intelligence from the Poodle and eagerness to please from the Bernese. Positive reinforcement works best; they’re sensitive and respond poorly to harsh correction.

fur coats & care

What color is Bailey?

Bailey is a blue merle Bernedoodle — a marbled coat pattern caused by a merle gene inherited through the Poodle line. It creates patches of gray, black, and white with lighter mottling.

What color is Beso?

Beso is a tricolor Bernedoodle, the classic Bernese-style pattern. Her coat features a black base with rust (tan) points above the eyes and on the legs, plus white markings on the chest, muzzle, and paws. This coloring comes from the Bernese Mountain Dog genetics and is often considered the most traditional Bernedoodle look.

Do Bernedoodles change color as they grow?

Yes — dramatically. Many puppies fade (called “clearing”) as they mature due to the Poodle fading gene. Black coats often turn charcoal, silver, or smoky brown over time.

What coat types do Bernedoodles have?

- Straight (more Bernese)
- Wavy / fleece (most common)
- Curly (more Poodle)
Wavier = easier brushing
Curlier = less shedding but more maintenance

Can two Bernedoodles have completely different coats?

Yes, even siblings can look like different breeds because doodle genetics are highly variable.

How often do Bernedoodles need grooming?

Every 6–8 weeks professionally, plus brushing at home several times a week to prevent matting.

Do they need haircuts or trims?

Yes, Bernedoodles have hair, not fur. Without trims their coat continuously grows and mats.

EATS & TREATS

Do they have any allergies?

Yes, Bailey has a confirmed poultry allergy. She cannot eat chicken, turkey, duck, eggs, or any ingredient derived from poultry (including chicken fat or chicken meal). Because of this, we only work with treats and food brands that offer poultry-free options. If you’re a brand reaching out, please make sure your products are completely poultry-free before contacting us — it keeps her safe and saves everyone time 💛

What proteins do your dogs eat?

Their diet typically includes beef, lamb, salmon, whitefish, pork, and occasionally novel proteins like venison. Rotating proteins helps prevent sensitivities and keeps meals interesting for them.

What treats work best for sensitive dogs?

Single-ingredient treats or limited-ingredient recipes tend to work best — especially fish, lamb, or beef-based options without hidden poultry additives.

New York City

Are Bernedoodles good apartment dogs?

Yes, Mini Bernedoodles adapt very well to apartment living as long as they get daily exercise and mental stimulation. They’re known for being calm indoors and playful outside.

Do NYC restaurants allow dogs?

Only if they have outdoor spaces! We always call ahead to double-check, but we keep an updated list of our favorite dog-friendly dining spots on the blog.

Can I bring my dog on the subway?

Technically, yes, but there’s a catch: all dogs must be in a bag or carrier.
