Howl-o-ween in the East Village
A front-row look at NYC's legendary Halloween dog parade

Every October, Tompkins Square Park transforms into the most joyful, chaotic, and utterly fabulous block party in New York City — and the dress code is strictly four legs only.
The Annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade has been a beloved East Village tradition for over 30 years, drawing hundreds of costumed pups (and their very devoted humans) for a day of judging, parading, and uncontrollable cuteness. It's free, it's open to all, and it is — without question — the best use of a Saturday in October.
This year's parade on October 19, 2024 did not disappoint. From the moment you walked through the park gates, the energy was electric. Dogs arrived in everything from elaborate group costumes to handcrafted couture that clearly took weeks to put together. One standout? A fluffy Bernedoodle dressed as a full pickleball player — yellow jersey, tiny paddle, and an orange wiffle ball held aloft like a trophy. The crowd lost it.
The parade itself winds through the park, with dogs and their owners showing off their looks for judges and spectators alike. There are costume contests by category — Best In Show, Most Creative, Best Owner/Dog Duo — and the competition, while spirited, is always good-natured. This is a celebration, not a competition. Everyone goes home a winner.
Pro tips if you're planning for 2025:
- Arrive early. The park fills up fast and the best viewing spots go quickly.
- If your dog is reactive or crowd-sensitive, consider watching from the outer edges rather than the thick of it.
- Bring water, snacks, and a lot of patience — you will stop every ten feet to take photos.
- The costume contest registration typically opens in the morning, so get there by 10am if you want to compete.
The Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade isn't just an event — it's a reminder of what makes this city so special. Where else can you watch a Dachshund dressed as a hot dog get a standing ovation from 500 strangers?
