If you've been looking for a reason to go to a paint-your-own-pottery café — and let's be honest, you didn't need one — Happy Medium just gave you the best one possible: you can paint a custom bowl for your dog.
Happy Medium is an art café in NYC that lets you walk in, pick a piece of pottery, and paint it however you like — no experience required, no pressure, just vibes and creativity. It's the kind of place that feels like a deep exhale the moment you walk in. There's coffee, there's art, and there's a genuinely lovely outdoor garden space that's welcoming to dogs.
We visited with our pups and made a full afternoon of it. The garden (pictured above) is the kind of outdoor space you don't expect to find in New York City — lush greenery, a small pond with lily pads, terracotta pots everywhere, blue umbrellas overhead, and a distinctly European summer garden energy. The dogs were immediately at ease, which says a lot.
But back to the main event: the dog bowl. Happy Medium offers pottery pieces specifically sized for pet bowls, and painting one for your dog is one of the most satisfying creative projects you'll ever do. You can write their name, paint their portrait (or attempt to — ours was abstract at best), add paw prints, or go full custom with colors that match your home. When it's fired and finished, you have a one-of-a-kind piece that your dog will use every single day.
It's also genuinely a wonderful activity for people who think they "aren't creative." The staff is helpful, the atmosphere is low-key, and there's no wrong way to paint a bowl. We saw first-timers make absolute masterpieces, and we saw experienced painters produce something charmingly chaotic. Everyone left happy.
What to know before you go:
- Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends.
- Dogs are welcome in the outdoor garden space — confirm current dog policy when booking, as it may vary seasonally.
- The pottery needs to be fired after painting, so you'll pick it up (or have it shipped) a week or two later — worth the wait.
- Budget a couple of hours — this is an activity to linger over, not rush.
Whether you're looking for a solo creative afternoon, a date, or a dog-friendly outing with friends, Happy Medium delivers something genuinely special. And your dog gets a bowl that was made with love. Win-win.
